RETIREMENT? JUST SAY 'NO.' FEISTY NEW BOOK SHOWS HOW

Early retirement is on everyone's wish list, right? Not so, say Marika and Howard Stone, authors of a provocative new book, Too Young to Retire: An Off-the-Road Map to the Rest of Your Life (The Writers' Collective 2003). "Retirement is irrelevant and hazardous to one's health," said Howard Stone. "Because we are all living longer, we are better off just saying ‘no' to retirement and organizing our futures in a more positive way. The problem is, most of us haven't a clue where to begin."

Too Young to Retire: An Off-the-Road Map to the Rest of Your Life takes off where the authors' own journey into uncharted territory began – at ages 64 and 57, in a narrow escape from a Sunbelt retirement. The book offers alternatives to retirement based on research and actual case histories – their own included – of people 50, 60 and older, who are engaged in interesting work and community service. Too Young to Retire takes a fresh look at the usual subjects -- money, work, business opportunities, volunteering, travel and health – and is packed with imaginative suggestions, exercises and a complete Resource section.    

"We were motivated to write this book for the same reason we launched www.2young2retire.com, the website of retirement alternatives," said Marika Stone. "We witnessed too many of our peers give up on themselves and fritter away their remaining time on earth in trivial pursuits. We thought that was a terrible loss, for the individuals themselves and society. 2young2retire.com has become a kind of underground movement for renewal and reinvention. The message needs to be repeated, so we put it into print."         

"We'd like to see retirement retired, if not in our lifetime, then in those of our children," said Howard Stone, "so this book is really for everyone."

Howard Stone is a former advertising sales and publishing executive who "reinvented" himself as a personal coach and motivational speaker. In addition to serving as editorial director and webmaster for www.2young2retire.com, Marika Stone teaches yoga.
